The Children’s Hospital - Westmead

The Emergency Medical Unit (EMU) and Triage expansion were part of the original Master Planning of the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW); this single project is but one of over twenty individual projects undertaken by HPI for this client.

The project was built into two stages, stage one being the EMU and stage two the Triage area with its support services. HPI was responsible for full documentation and project management of the project. Scope and inclusions were:

• Eight separate treatment rooms within the short stay unit.

Bathurst, Orange, Bloomfield Hospital Projects (BOB)

Greater Western Area Health Service

New hospital including Emergency Department and Mental Health Unit. Also offering 4 operating theatres, ICU, CCU, rehabilitation, chronic and continuing care, medical and surgical beds. The project includes the refurbishment of an existing heritage listed building for administration and education.

Tweed Heads Public Hospital

Lismore Base Hospital Master Plan

North Coast Area Health Service

Redevelopment of the entire Lismore Base Hospital including several  tower blocks, existing mental health unit, cancer centre and back of  house facilities. The redevelopment will have over 180 beds, 7 operating theatres, a new integrated cancer centre with two radiotherapy bunkers and an integrated mental health unit with another 48 beds.

NSW Health and North Coast Area Health Service

This is the Stage 1 of the Lismore Base Hospital redevelopment of the  entire campus (also by HPI). Stage 1 involves an integrated mental health unit with 48 beds for Acute, Sub-acute, High Dependency and Child and Adolescent Mental Health. It also includes the Area mental health  offices and Adult Ambulatory Mental Health.

Long Bay Forensic and Prison Hospitals (With Codd Stenders Architects), 5 hospitals in total

Justice Health

This is the development of two distinct projects one as a Prison Hospital and one as a forensic hospital. These involve two separate sites and 9 hospital buildings. The project offers 135 forensic and 85  prison hospital beds including some rehabilitation, medical and surgical beds. The development includes a separate recreation centre, visitors  building and administration.

Total redevelopment of 3 hospital components, Young District Hospital, Young Mercy Care Centre and Young Community Health Centre, all co-located on one site. The facilities will be separately managed but will share common services and resources. The complex will include 2 new wards, operating suite, emergency department, radiology, pathology, medical records, birthing suite, HDU, day surgery, allied health, palliative care, community mental health, dental care, catering and all back of house facilities.

 

The Alfred Hospital Integrated Cardiac Services

Bayside Health

Planning and design for an integrated cardiac inpatient service accommodating cardiac, cardiothoracic surgical and coronary care patients on one floor level 3 of the hospital. The redevelopment included an acute cardiac unit of 12 beds and up to 35 inpatient cardiac beds.

Master planning studies and options for the total redevelopment of the level 3 clinical services block comprising all operating theatres, day  surgery theatres, birthing suites, neonatal ICU special care nurseries,  CSSD and the department of anaesthesia. 5 options and several  sub-options have been prepared for costing and selection.  This work is under the overall WIN program.

Westmead Hospital Masterplan and PDP Architectural Services for the WIN program

NSW Health and Western Sydney Area Health Service  

This project comprises a $175m portion of the WIN program which includes Westmead, Auburn and St Josephs Hospitals.. HPI has been responsible for the concept planning for inclusion in the Project Definition Plan and tendering for the Managing Partner Program. The most detailed part of the project is the new 39 bed ICU including a satellite CT and an ultra-isolation facility.

This is a component of early works within the Stage 1, Phase 1 of the WIN program. The new 3 storey building referred to as the Link building contains a 39 bed ICU, possibly the most advanced in Australia. The facility includes all enclosed (glazed) rooms and 2 ultra isolation suites.

Westmead Hospital Façade Study

HPI was appointed to investigate the external options for Westmead Hospital. The study included the preparation of recommendations for external façade systems and finishes for application across the whole of the Westmead Hospital campus. The project covered not only the existing projects but those programmed under the WIN program and beyond. The aim was to achieve an acceptable level of façade consistency and continuity.

Westmead Hospital Pedestrian Traffic Report

HPI was commissioned to prepare a Discussion paper in the context of the Master Concept Planning for Westmead Hospital. Its purpose was to examine the pedestrian (staff, patients, visitors and supplies) pathways/wayfinding and lifts (dedicated, public, service) as proposed in the Plan. The report reviewed the pedestrian access and wayfinding assumptions and that the placement, number and allocation of lifts were reasonable, and made recommendations as necessary.

Design and documentation for the relocation of Spinal Medicine and  Rehabilitation services from Prince Henry Hospital to Prince of Wales  Hospital, involving refitting and refurbishing existing space in Parkes  and Clinical Sciences buildings and additional new built space to  accommodate 26 Spinal Unit beds and 28 General Rehabilitation beds,  together with new Hydrotherapy Pool and Therapy Areas.  Includes consequent relocations of several departments including Administration,  Pharmacy, CHESS, Orthotics, Rehabilitation Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Domestic Services and the Volunteer Coffee Shop into a combination of new built and refurbished space.

This includes the Perioperative/ day surgery, renal/ urology, medical/ radiation oncology,  acute ages care and ambulatory services. The work also includes the services upgrades including A/C to all areas.

John Hunter Hospital, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit

New 12 bed Child and Adolescent Mental Health unit designed as an  extension to the existing John Hunter Hospital. The unit is on two levels, one for all patient care areas and one for staff offices. The unit incorporates the latest planning principles for mental health facilities endorsed by the Centre for Mental Health. Other facilities  include common rooms, therapy rooms, magistrates room, patient  courtyards etc.

The new department will be over 50% larger than the  existing area, incorporating the latest thinking in the design of Emergency Departments. The new ED allows for fast track, trauma as well  as short stay functions.

Anzac Memorial District Hospital Hydrotherapy

This project involves a new Hydrotherapy pool to serve the Rehabilitation ward at the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital. The pool is self contained with its own change rooms and pant room. The pool is fully air conditioned. 

 

Boronia Psycho-geriatric Unit

HPI was responsible for the PFP including a detailed brief and site selection. HPI also coordinated project costing and evaluation of 5 options. Finally the Mater Hospital site was recommended for the new unit. This will allow the unit to share resources with other Acute Mental Health facilities on the Mater site.

Ballina Emergency Department

Project Management, design and documentation for the total redevelopment  and enlargement of the existing emergency department, radiology, tele-medicine,  ambulance bay and external carpark. The plan brings the most recent emergency planning models to the Ballina ED.

 

 North Coast Head Injury Service  North Coast Area Health Service Located in Laurel Avenue, in close proximity to Lismore Base Hospital, the Head Injury Service is both an out service and in-house community facility for the support and on-going treatment of head injured members of the community. An existing 1920s house was refurbished and extended to provide counselling services, meeting and communal areas and external gardens for clients to participate in therapies and to assist them in the reassimilation into the wider community. The heritage house maintained its panelled inlay floors and ornate ceilings in the lounge/group room whilst the internal areas refurbished to provide greater accessibility as well as a home like environment.

Grafton Methadone Clinic

Located within the old community health wing of Grafton Base Hospital, the Pharmacotherapy unit was constructed to provide the latest of drug dependency services to the Grafton area and surrounding communities. Both methadone and alternative treatments are provided as well as counselling services. Housed within an existing brick and weatherboard building on Arthur Street, the Clinic is both discrete and private for its clientele as well as being the state of art in its security and management of client dosing.
